sun rising burial ground
Sun Rising Natural Burial Ground is a beautifully peaceful, carefully managed, green burial ground, open for coffin burial and the interment of cremated remains. Run within strong environmental and social ethics, its aim is to create a place of real lasting peace, for those who have died and those who mourn them, while establishing a nature reserve - a haven for native flora and fauna - that will be a precious legacy to leave to our descendants.
Finding The Site : For many years, Sun Rising was just another field 'set aside' by the farmer who owned it, growing rye grass and clover to hay. Immediately we saw it, we knew it was the perfect place: the Cotswold escarpment rising behind and the view over the Warwickshire plains stretching out ahead, held by hedgerows of ash, hawthorn, blackthorn and wild rose.
Opening : In early 2006, it was a delight to be given the opportunity to take responsibility for this meadow - and create something both useful and beautiful. Sun Rising Natural Burial Ground opened in the summer of 2006, with our first burial taking place in early July that year. By the end of 2009 we have nearly 100 people buried at the site.
The Vision : This is the beginning of a long project - it takes 250 years to create a rich old woodland! But a nature reserve evolves, with careful management, a little each year, and it is with this gentle patience that Sun Rising will develop ... from the open field of rye grass, into a haven of natural beauty, with copses of native woodland and meadows ablaze with wildflowers and butterflies.
